ABC Kids is a child sponsorship program that aims to meet the basic needs of the impoverished and needy children of Rwanda as well as help develop their spiritual growth. The program supports children, either orphaned or living in extreme poverty by providing for school fees and supplies, medical care, other basic needs, and discipleship.
The support for the chidren first began in 2002 when members of Christ Gospel Fellowship Church of Rwanda (CGF) came together to help provide tuition and school supplies to the needy children in their community. They struggled to maintain the financial support for the kids on an ongoing basis until they crossed paths with some new friends from the U.S. In 2005, a small team from California came to Rwanda and visited CGF. Soon after, ABC Kids was developed. The program started with 40 children but quickly grew to 300 kids being supported by families in the U.S. Since then, many of these kids have successfully graduated from Senior 6 and some have successfully completed vocational school. The remaining kids have a few years left in school, but without the support through this program, many of these kids would not be in school at all.
No matter the number of kids sponsored, every single child supported makes an immese difference in that child's life, beyond what many of us could ever understand.
As Tasiana shared, "In the beginning of 2008 I was blessed when I got a sponsor. They have been so good to me. They have helped me in my daily life. I was able to go school though some of my friends and neighbors were not able to make it. I was able to get medical insurance which is very important in life. I got clothes at different times. Let us join hands and clap for the sponsors. I thank God for having brought them back again. In past days I didn’t have hope we would see them anymore. And this is shared by most of us. We didn’t think they would come back again. I think every child who is here and I myself, our future is a bright one. I thank God for you for supporting me so much. I started in Primary 4 and now I have completed Senior 6. God bless you so much.”
